about

Where The Bog Is…….

Ciarán MacMathuna made many a visit to Sliabh Luachra where he recorded and collected the music of local legends Padraig O’Keeffe, Denis Murphy, Johnny O’Leary and many more. On one such occasion he managed to get a recording of Padraig O’Keeffe speaking, one of the only recordings of O’Keeffes voice that we know of. When asked if he could describe his native townland Glountane, and where it lies, Padraig wittingly replied…. “Where the bog is”.

This is our debut album. It was recorded in Tureencahill National School and not too far from “where the bog is”. This is an expression of our respect and appreciation for the music and history of our native Sliabh Luachra.
Since we began playing together some years ago, we have had a shared interest in researching and playing our local music. We’ve also enjoyed hearing the yarns associated with the music.
This album features a host of rare and not so rare music from the Sliabh Luachra area, music that we have acquired through original recordings and manuscripts as well as commercial publications such as Terry Moylans “Johnny O Leary of Sliabh Luachra” as well as the renowned O’Neill and Breathnach collections.
It has always been our intention to stay true to the unique Sliabh Luachra style and we have tried to convey this musical style in our album.
We hope you enjoy!
